Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

We walked all night.

I kept to back roads and tree lines, carrying Sophie when she tired, walking until my legs burned and the sky turned pale gray. By dawn, we reached the small cabin Claire’s father had built years ago, deep in the hills, forgotten by almost everyone. Elena knew of it—but she believed it was locked, abandoned, useless.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside. Dust sheets covered the furniture. Sunlight filtered through small windows. It was safe. For now.

I settled Sophie by the fireplace with food and blankets. Then I began searching. If Elena was the fourth person—if she had been working with Vanessa from the very beginning—then everything I thought I knew was wrong. I needed proof. Something Claire may have hidden here long ago.

In the back of a drawer beneath the bed, I found it. A sealed envelope, addressed to me, marked TO BE OPENED ONLY IF I DO NOT RETURN.

Claire’s handwriting. Dated the week before she died.

My hands trembled as I broke the seal.

*My dearest Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, I am gone. And Elena has likely betrayed us. I have known for years. She hated me. She envied everything. She told Vanessa everything about us. Every weakness. Every fear. They were best friends in their hatred of me. And then Mark joined them—he owed Elena a debt he could never repay.*

*I did not tell you because I hoped—against hope—that blood would stay blood. That sisterhood would be stronger than greed. I was wrong. Elena helped Vanessa poison me. She watched me fade and said nothing. She stood in this room and told me I deserved to lose everything.*

*And the child, Adrian. Be very careful with Sophie. Elena believes Sophie stands between her and full control of the inheritance. She will try to take her. Or worse.*

*If you find this, go to the family lawyer named Arthur Halloway. He knows everything. He holds documents that disinherit Elena completely. And he holds proof of her long conspiracy with Vanessa. Go to him. Trust no one else. And please—protect our daughter. Forgive me for not telling you the truth sooner. I did not want to believe it myself.*

*With all my love, Claire.*

I lowered the letter, breathless.

Everything made sense now. Every odd moment. Every warning Claire had tried to give. Elena had been the architect of much of it. Vanessa was the face of the plot—but Elena was the mind. She had the motive. The knowledge. The access. She had used Vanessa’s obsession and Mark’s debt to destroy the sister she despised.

And then I read one final paragraph, tucked at the very bottom, written in a hurried, shaky hand:

*One last thing. The inheritance is not all money. Our father left something far more valuable. Something they will kill to possess. It is hidden beneath the floor beneath the fireplace. Do not let them find it. And remember—they do not know you know. Use that. Stay alive. Protect Sophie.*

I stood up and pried at the loose stones beneath the hearth. Beneath lay an iron box. Unlocked. Inside—documents. Deeds to land far more valuable than anyone guessed. Stock holdings in a corporation Elena and Vanessa desperately wanted to control. And a final letter from Claire’s father, naming Claire sole heir and explicitly disinheriting Elena for “her proven treachery and malice.”

Proof. Absolute, undeniable proof.

With these documents, I could strip Elena of every penny she hoped to steal. I could destroy Vanessa’s claims completely. I could prove conspiracy, motive, and decades of plotting.

But I also knew—once Elena realized I held this—she would stop at nothing. She would not just try to take Sophie. She would try to kill us both.

I turned and looked toward the window. Sophie stood there, staring out at the path leading up to the cabin. Her face was pale. Her voice small and terrified.

“Daddy… Aunt Elena is walking up the path. And she has a man with her.”
