Chapter 8 - The Real TargetDominic found the woman before sunrise.

Her name was Evelyn Shaw.

Former medical consultant.

Former investigator.

And according to Dominic's files, she had disappeared two years ago.

But there was something worse.

She had worked with Dominic's father.

The same man who had built the Moretti empire.

The same man Dominic had spent years trying to escape.

I looked at Dominic.

“You knew her.”

“When I was younger.”

“What did she do?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

He stared at me.

Then finally said:

“She studied my family.”

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

He opened another file.

Inside was a photograph of Dominic as a child.

Beside him stood his father.

And behind them—

Evelyn.

I stared at the picture.

Then I noticed something.

A small symbol written in the corner.

The same symbol appeared on the hospital report.

And on the photograph from Dominic's nursery.

“This isn't revenge,” I whispered.

Dominic looked at me.

“What?”

“It's a pattern.”

He stepped closer.

“Explain.”

“They didn't attack your son because they wanted him dead.”

I pointed to the photograph.

“They attacked him because they wanted you to react.”

“Why?”

“To make you look guilty.”

Dominic went still.

“Guilty of what?”

“Something bigger.”

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You finally understand.”

Dominic's eyes hardened.

“Who are you?”

“You're asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

The voice laughed.

“Ask why your father kept the records.”

Dominic froze.

The line went dead.

I looked at him.

“What records?”

He didn't answer.

Because suddenly he remembered.

There had been a locked room in his father's old house.

A room Dominic had never been allowed to enter.

A room that had remained sealed for twenty-five years.

May you like

Until yesterday.

When someone had broken the lock.
