Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to DieEvelyn revealed the truth slowly.

Dominic's father had built an underground network involving hospitals, private clinics, corrupt doctors, and wealthy families.
Babies had been used as leverage.
Medical information had been sold.
Families had been blackmailed.
And when someone refused to cooperate—
their children became targets.
Dominic's father had eventually tried to leave the organization.
They killed him.
Dominic had spent years believing his father died naturally.
He hadn't.
And Leo's death wasn't random either.
Evelyn had been monitoring me because she knew Dominic would eventually uncover the network.
But there was one thing she hadn't expected.
Me.
“You weren't supposed to survive either,” she said.
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because you were supposed to blame yourself.”
My chest tightened.
“You knew about Leo.”
“Yes.”
“You watched him die.”
“Yes.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked:
“Why?”
“Because grief makes people predictable.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“You used her.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I used everyone.”
Then her expression changed.
“But your son changed the plan.”
Dominic froze.
“What do you mean?”
“The tablet wasn't meant to kill him.”
“Then what was it?”
“A sedative.”
I stared at her.
“You wanted him to stop crying.”
“Yes.”
“So everyone would think the baby was finally calm.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Then he would stop breathing.”
Dominic's face became murderous.
“And the bodyguard?”
“Was supposed to plant the evidence.”
“Against me?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You would have been arrested for your son's death.”
Dominic looked at me.
“And she?”
Evelyn's eyes met mine.
“She would have been blamed for interfering.”
Silence.
Then I heard something.
A tiny sound.
A cry.
Weak.
But alive.
The baby.
Dominic's son had survived.
For the first time, Dominic smiled.
Not like a crime boss.
Like a father.
He turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Wait.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“You said the tablet wasn't meant to kill him.”
“Yes.”
“Then who ordered it?”
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
She looked toward the hallway.
And whispered:
“I never said I was the one who ordered it.”
Dominic's face hardened.
“What?”
Evelyn stepped backward.
“There is someone above me.”
“Who?”
She looked at me.
Then at Dominic.
“The person who has been watching you since the night Leo died.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Evelyn smiled one final time.
Then said:
“You already know her.”
The lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed through the house.
Dominic grabbed me and pulled me to the floor.
When the emergency lights flickered back on—
Evelyn was gone.
And beside the doorway was a single photograph.
It showed Dominic's newborn son.
Taken inside the hospital.
Only minutes earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
ROUND ONE FAILED.
ROUND TWO BEGINS WITH THE MOTHER.
I looked at Dominic.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Because we finally understood the truth.
May you like
Saving the baby had never been the end of the story.
It had only made us the next two targets.
