Chapter 4 - The Second BabyDominic lowered the phone.

“What happened?” I asked.
He didn't answer.
His oldest bodyguard approached.
“Boss?”
Dominic looked at him.
“They found something else.”
“Where?”
“At the house.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“What?”
“The nursery.”
I felt a chill.
“What did they find?”
Dominic looked at me.
“A second bottle.”
My stomach turned.
“What was in it?”
“We don't know yet.”
He looked toward the ambulance.
“But it was prepared for the baby.”
I suddenly understood.
Tonight wasn't an accident.
Someone had planned something.
The crying.
The bottle.
The tablet.
The kitchen.
The bodyguard.
None of it felt random anymore.
Dominic walked toward the door.
I followed.
He stopped.
“You're staying here.”
“I don't think so.”
“This isn't your problem.”
“You made it my problem when you let me hold him.”
He stared at me.
“You don't know what you're walking into.”
“I know enough.”
His expression hardened.
“You could get hurt.”
“So could your son.”
That silenced him.
We drove to the hospital.
The entire way, Dominic's phone kept ringing.
He ignored almost every call.
Finally, one message appeared.
He read it.
His face changed.
I looked at him.
“What?”
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a photograph.
The baby's nursery.
A crib.
A rocking chair.
And taped to the crib was a photograph.
A picture of Dominic holding his son.
Across the photograph, someone had written three words.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.
Dominic stared at it.
“Who would do this?”
I didn't answer.
Because I was beginning to suspect something.

Maybe the target wasn't the baby.
Maybe the baby was only the warning.
