Chapter 6 - The Wife Who Knew Too MuchHer name was Elena Moretti.

She arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Perfectly composed.
Except for her hands.
They were shaking.
The moment she saw Dominic, she ran toward him.
“Where is my baby?”
“He's stable.”
She covered her mouth.
Then she looked at me.
Her eyes stopped.
“You.”
I frowned.
“Do I know you?”
“No.”
She looked at Dominic.
“Who is she?”
“She helped our son.”
Elena's expression changed.
Not gratitude.
Fear.
“You let a stranger hold him?”
Dominic stared at her.
“She was the only one who noticed he was in trouble.”
Elena looked at me again.
“What exactly did you see?”
I answered carefully.
“A tablet.”
Her face went white.
Too white.
Dominic noticed.
“So you know what it was?”
“No.”
“Then why are you scared?”
“I’m his mother.”
“That isn't an answer.”
Elena looked away.
Dominic stepped closer.
“What are you hiding?”
“Nothing.”
He didn't believe her.
Neither did I.
Then Elena whispered something.
“I told you we shouldn't have gone to Bellavita.”
Dominic froze.
“You knew?”
She realized her mistake.
“Knew what?”
“You knew something would happen.”
“I didn't mean—”
Dominic grabbed her wrist.
“Who told you?”
She started crying.
“I was warned.”
“By who?”
“I don't know.”
“Who?”
She looked at me.
And then said something that made the blood leave my face.
“Your son wasn't the first baby.”
Dominic went silent.
“What does that mean?”
Elena shook her head.
“I can't.”
“You can.”
She whispered:
“There were other families.”
“What families?”
“Families connected to Dominic.”
I stared at her.
“Babies?”
She nodded.
“Three.”
Dominic's face became expressionless.
“What happened to them?”
Elena began crying harder.
“They all died.”
The hospital hallway suddenly felt freezing.
Dominic stepped backward.
“My God.”
Then Elena looked directly at me.
“You shouldn't have saved him.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
May you like
She whispered:
“Now they'll come after you too.”
