Chapter 8 - Judgment on ArroganceBy the end of that week, the pressure of the lawsuit and media heat caused the Vale family's business empire to crumble faster than a sandcastle hit by a giant wave. The board of directors of Richard’s real estate firm voted to strip him of his chairmanship to salvage corporate reputation.

I received a call from Stephanie on Sunday evening.

When I tapped answer, her once-haughty, arrogant tone was entirely gone. There was only choked sobbing and utter panic.

"Charles... please," Stephanie wept on the other end. "Drop the criminal charges. My father is facing ruin. The police are considering an arrest warrant for me over document falsification. If I have a criminal record, my life is over."

I looked out the window, where the silver moonlight illuminated the sprawling fields of Willowbrook farm. The night wind rustling through the maple leaves made a peaceful whispering sound.

"When you called my mother someone who smelled like manure, did you think of her dignity, Stephanie?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "When you and your father planned to throw my mother into a nursing home to bulldoze this house, did you think of our feelings?"

"I was wrong... greed blinded me..." she begged.

"Greed didn't blind you, Stephanie. Your nature has always been like this—only valuing status and money. What you're facing now is simply the price of your own cruelty."

"Charles! Don't do this to me..."

I pressed end call, popped out the SIM card, and tossed it straight into the trash can by my desk. From that second on, the name Stephanie Vale was officially erased from my life.
