Chapter 6 - The Letter from the Law FirmThe next morning, while a thick mist still lingered over the corn stalks in the north field, a sleek black luxury sedan from Weiss & Associates pulled right up to the front entrance.

Harold Weiss, an elderly man with silvery hair, a sharply tailored suit, and his signature tortoiseshell glasses, stepped out. Carrying a dark brown briefcase, he walked across the dew-kissed grass up to the porch.

I was waiting by the door, arms crossed. Mom was brewing tea inside, and Emma sat at the table reviewing the drawings and documents from the previous day.

"Charles," lawyer Weiss greeted with a solemn nod as he stepped onto the landing. "I heard about the wedding... I am so sorry. But our current situation forces us to address an even more urgent matter."

"Get straight to the point, Harold," I said, gesturing for him to come into the small living room.

Lawyer Weiss opened his briefcase, pulling out a thick file folder stamped with bright red seals. "Early this morning, my office received a formal legal notice from Mr. Richard Vale's legal representation. They have filed a civil lawsuit demanding breach of contract damages for the canceled engagement, while petitioning the court to review Margaret Hartwell's estate guardianship under the pretext of an 'unsafe living environment and potential financial hardship on the current guardian'—meaning you."

I let out a cold laugh. Classic Richard Vale—strike first, twist the truth, and use money to manipulate the local legal system.

"On what grounds are they claiming my mother lacks mental capacity?" I asked, my voice sharp.

"They included two private psychological evaluations from Boston," lawyer Weiss replied, pushing the paperwork across the table. "While these documents show procedural anomalies, if a judge fails to review them thoroughly before issuing a preliminary injunction, they could freeze Willowbrook farm's land operations within sixty days."

"That's exactly what they want," Emma said, stepping out from the kitchen and setting a cup of tea on the table for lawyer Weiss. "They want to freeze the farm to force Charles into ceding land development rights under an out-of-court settlement."

Lawyer Weiss looked up at Emma with mild surprise, then nodded approvingly. "You are quite right, my dear. If we don't counterattack swiftly by exposing the forged origins of those medical evaluations, they will exert massive financial pressure on your family."

I clenched my fists, looking out the window where Mom was quietly feeding the chickens outside.

"Harold," I said, my gaze steady. "Prepare a countersuit charging document forgery, defamation, and commercial fraud conspiracy directly targeting Richard and Stephanie Vale. Furthermore, request an independent medical evaluation for my mother this week to prove she is entirely sound of mind."

Lawyer Weiss smiled faintly, closing the folder. "I've been waiting to hear you say that, Charles. Let's see how the Vale family holds up when the spotlight of the legal stage shines directly onto their dirty little corners."
