Chapter 18 - A New TraditionChristmas Eve at Willowbrook was unlike anything I had ever experienced. In the past, holidays meant attending stiff, mandatory society galas where every smile was calculated and every conversation revolved around portfolios and prestige.

Here, the celebration was warm, genuine, and filled with laughter.

Thomas and his grandson Leo joined us for dinner, bringing a handcrafted wooden rocking chair they had built together as a housewarming gift for Mom. The dining room table groaned under the weight of a roasted ham, mashed potatoes, fresh garden vegetables, and a towering spiced apple pie baked by Emma and Mom working side by side.

As the grandfather clock in the hallway struck eight, we gathered in the living room around a tall pine tree cut straight from the edge of our north forest, decorated with homemade popcorn strings and simple wooden ornaments.

"Before we open gifts," Mom said, standing up with her glass of warm cider, her voice clear and steady, "I want to propose a toast."

Everyone quieted, looking toward her with affectionate smiles.

"This year, we walked through the bitterest winter of our lives," Mom continued, her gaze sweeping over each of us. "We faced deceit, greed, and the loss of what we thought we needed. But in doing so, we found what truly matters: truth, courage, and each other. To family, and to new roots."

"To new roots," we all chorused, glasses clinking together in a joyful toast that echoed off the rustic wooden beams.

Later that night, after our guests had departed and the house grew quiet, I stood out on the front porch beneath a canopy of brilliant winter stars. Emma stepped out beside me, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head against my chest.

"Merry Christmas, Charles," she whispered.

"Merry Christmas, Emma," I answered, kissing the top of her head. "Are you happy you stayed?"

She looked up at me, her eyes shining with absolute certainty in the starlight. "I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life."
