Chapter 9 - The Ironclad Shield

I stared down at the documents Harrison had placed on the table.

They were drafted with pristine, watertight precision. They didn't just protect us from Julian and Jonathan’s predatory maneuvers; they completely restructured the corporate governance of a multi-billion-dollar empire, placing the steering wheel directly in my hands.

“And if I sign this retainer and assumption agreement?” I asked, looking up.

“Then you walk into Harrington Towers tomorrow morning not as an indigent outsider, but as the executive chair of the board,” Harrison said calmly. “Julian will be stripped of his partnership before he can even finish his morning scotch. And your daughter’s future will be secured beyond the reach of every vulture in New England.”

I reached for the pen resting beside the folder.

For years, my family had treated me like a ghost. They had mocked my library job, belittled my salary, and shoved me into the background while they swam in luxury built on lies and exclusion.

Now, sitting in my modest kitchen at midnight, my daughter sleeping soundly down the hall, I held the pen that held the keys to their entire kingdom.

I signed my name at the bottom of the page in clean, bold strokes.

Harrison picked up the paper, checked the signature, and smiled—a genuine, respectful smile.

“Pleasure doing business with you, Madam Chair,” he said, standing up. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day.”
