Chapter 14 - The New Foundation

By Wednesday morning, the corporate restructuring of Sterling Enterprises was officially announced to the global financial markets.

The press release sent immediate shockwaves through Wall Street. Financial news networks scrambled to cover the sudden ouster of Julian and Jonathan Sterling, the appointment of an independent executive board led by Harrison Cole, and the historic empowerment of a new majority trust holder.

Analysts praised the move as a long-overdue purge of toxic leadership, and stock values surged by six percent within the first four hours of trading.

I sat behind the massive glass desk in the executive suite, reviewing the consolidated philanthropic and community development initiatives that Julian had shelved for years.

My intercom buzzed softly.

“Madam Chair,” Harrison’s voice came through the speaker. “You have a visitor in the private reception. It’s... well, it’s someone requesting an audience through regular corporate channels.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Who is it?”

“Your mother’s cousin, Victoria. She’s brought financial statements from the old estate.”

I sighed lightly, tapping my pen against the desk. “Send her in.”

Ten minutes later, an impeccably dressed older woman walked into my office. She looked nervous, clutching a vintage leather folder to her chest as if it were a shield.

“Clara,” Victoria began tentatively. “Or... Madam Chair, I suppose.”

“Sit down, Victoria,” I said, gesturing to the chair opposite my desk. “You don’t need to call me Madam Chair in private.”

Victoria sat down stiffly, letting out a nervous breath. “I just wanted to say... none of us knew how badly Beatrice and Julian were falsifying the family lineage records to keep Elena’s branch locked out. We thought she had simply vanished. We want you to know our branch of the family supports your trusteeship completely.”

I looked at her for a long moment, recognizing the nervous calculation of people who only respected power when it was holding the checkbook.

“Thank you, Victoria,” I said evenly. “The past is audited and closed. As long as everyone plays by the rules and treats people with basic human decency, there’s a place for everyone in this company. But the old days of entitlement and cruelty are permanently over.”

May you like

Victoria nodded rapidly, swallowed hard, and excused herself within three minutes.
