Chapter 13 - The Grandfather’s Entrance

Before I could call down to catering, the private side door connecting the executive suite to the penthouse office swung open.
Arthur Sterling stepped into the room.
He walked slowly, leaning heavily on his carved mahogany cane, but his posture was straight and his eyes burned with a fierce, unmistakable vitality. The rest of the boardroom stood up in unison out of instinctive, long-standing habit.
Arthur waved a hand dismissively, telling them to sit down, and walked straight toward Maya and me.
“Well,” Arthur said, a fragile, emotional smile touching the corners of his mouth. “I see the new administration is off to a very efficient start.”
“We’re just getting warmed up, Arthur,” I said, pulling out a chair for him near the head of the table.
Arthur sat down heavily, letting out a long breath, and looked at Maya, who held up her drawing of a blue horse for him to see.
“That’s a magnificent horse, young lady,” Arthur rasped, his voice thick with emotion. He looked up at me, his expression turning solemn. “Clara... I owe you an apology. And a debt that can never truly be repaid. You walked into this viper’s nest carrying thirty years of our family’s sins, and you handled it with more grace than I ever managed in my entire career.”
“I didn’t do it for your forgiveness, Arthur,” I said honestly, leaning against the back of the chair. “I did it so my daughter would never have to look over her shoulder wondering if she belongs in the world.”
Arthur nodded slowly, a deep, respectful understanding passing between us.
“The board is ready for your opening address, Madam Chair,” Harrison Cole announced, sliding a pristine leather-bound folder across the desk.
I looked down at the documents, then glanced over at Maya, who was happily coloring her blue horse.
The audit of the past was complete. The hostile takeover was finished.

Now, it was time to build something real.
