Chapter 12 - The Eviction

The silence in the boardroom was absolute.

Julian opened his mouth to retort, but no words came out. He looked around the table, searching for an ally among the senior vice presidents who had spent years nodding at his every command.

One by one, those vice presidents averted their eyes, staring down at their leather-bound portfolios or fixing their gaze on the wall. They were corporate pragmatists; they didn’t care about family loyalty or ancient grudges. They cared about survival and who held the majority shares.

“Security,” Harrison called out calmly toward the open double doors.

Two broad-shouldered security guards stepped into the room, their expressions stone-faced and professional.

“Escort Mr. Sterling and Ms. Vance from the premises,” Harrison instructed smoothly. “Ensure their corporate credentials, keycards, and electronic access are permanently deactivated.”

“You can’t do this to me! I am a Sterling!” Julian screamed, thrashing his arm away as one of the guards gently but firmly took him by the elbow. “This company belongs to our family!”

“It does,” I replied quietly as they dragged him toward the doors. “And that’s why we’re finally taking it back.”

Evelyn didn’t fight. She stood up slowly, smoothed the front of her designer blazer, and walked out with her head held high, though her hands trembled visibly at her sides.

As the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind them, the heavy, suffocating pressure in the room seemed to lift.

I turned around, walking back toward where Maya was sitting quietly in a plush leather armchair, completely unfazed by the boardroom drama.

“All done, sweetie,” I said, smiling down at her.

“Can we get juice now?” Maya asked innocently.

May you like

I laughed, feeling a profound lightness in my chest. “Apple juice, coming right up.”
