Chapter 6 - The Blocked Number

The hum of the refrigerator filled the quiet kitchen as I held the phone to my ear.
“Claire?”
The voice on the other end was raspy, breathless, and completely unhinged. It didn't belong to Graham, and it wasn't a corporate debt collector.
It was my father.
“Dad,” I said, keeping my tone flat and guarded. “How did you get this number? It’s unlisted.”
“Your sister is locked in her bedroom upstairs, screaming into a pillow, and your mother has taken three sedatives just to stop hyperventilating,” Dad hissed through the phone, his voice shaking with a volatile mixture of humiliation and fury. “Do you have any idea what you and that—that child have done? The police are downstairs taking statements. Reporters are camped out at the estate gates!”
I looked across the kitchen table at Lily, who was quietly sipping a glass of water, watching me with wide, attentive eyes.
“I didn't do anything, Dad,” I replied steadily. “Graham and Vanessa built a house of cards out of greed and conspiracy. All Lily did was turn on the lights.”
“You orchestrated this!” he roared. “You’ve always been bitter because Vanessa got everything you ever wanted! You coached that little girl to spy on a high-powered attorney—”
“Stop right there,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a cold, razor-sharp edge that made Dad instantly choke off his sentence. “Do not blame Lily for exposing the fact that your precious future son-in-law was planning to fleece your company and leave Vanessa destitute. If you spent half as much time auditing your business partners as you do policing my life, you wouldn't be standing in a ruined ballroom right now.”
A heavy, suffocating silence hung on the line.
“We’re coming over,” Dad muttered viciously.
“If you or Vanessa step foot on this property,” I said, my voice ice-cold, “I will call the local police department and report you for harassment and trespassing. And trust me, given how many reporters are currently tracking your movements, a domestic disturbance call at my apartment will make the evening news by midnight.”

I didn't wait for him to answer. I hit End Call and dropped the phone onto the laminate counter.
