Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Chaos erupted across the Rosewood Estate ballroom like a powder keg meeting a match.
The polite, aristocratic veneer of Newport elite society shattered instantly. Bridesmaids began screaming, elderly relatives clutched their pearls, and several business partners of Graham’s firm stood up so fast their chairs crashed backward onto the stone floor.
Vanessa threw herself at Graham, sobbing hysterically as she tried to grab his lapels. “Graham, please! Don’t listen to a brat! We can fix this! We have a future together!”
Graham shoved her away with enough force that she stumbled backward into the wedding cake display, sending tiers of white fondant and sugar flowers crashing down onto her pristine designer gown in a magnificent, sticky explosion of white frosting.
“Stay the hell away from me,” Graham hissed, his voice venomous. He turned his eyes toward the crowd, realizing his entire legal career, his reputation in Newport, and his social standing had just been incinerated in less than three minutes. Without another word, he turned on his heel and sprinted out of the ballroom toward the parking exit, his tailored tuxedo jacket flying behind him.
Mom was hyperventilating in her seat, fanning herself with a linen menu card while Dad stared blankly at the floor, muttering something about stock portfolios and ruined partnerships.
I stood on the DJ platform, looking down at the magnificent, smoking ruin of my sister’s meticulously planned wedding.
Lily stepped up beside me, slipping her small hand back into mine. Her fingers were no longer shaking.
“Can we go home now, Mommy?” she asked quietly. “I think they’re done with the party.”
I looked down at her, feeling a strange mixture of absolute terror, profound shock, and a fierce, swelling wave of protective pride that nearly brought me to my knees.
“Yes, baby,” I whispered, pulling her tight against my side. “We’re going home.”
As we turned to walk down the steps of the platform, Vanessa scrambled out of the ruined wedding cake, her face caked in white frosting and mascara tears, looking like a ghost haunting a graveyard.
“You did this,” Vanessa whispered, her voice a poisonous hiss as she pointed a sticky, frosting-covered finger at me. “You ruined everything! You’ve always been jealous of me! You dragged your brat here to destroy my life!”
I stopped, turning my head slightly to look down at her from the top of the step. I didn't yell. I didn't gloat. I just offered a small, calm, devastating smile.

“I didn't destroy your life, Vanessa,” I said softly. “You and Graham built a house of cards out of lies and greed. All Lily did was point out where the wind was blowing.”
Without waiting for her reply, I took Lily’s hand, and we walked down the aisle together, leaving the glittering ruins of the Rosewood Estate far behind us.
