Chapter 11 - The Fallout at Harrington Towers

By Monday morning, the shockwaves from the Rosewood Estate disaster had ripped through downtown Boston with the force of a Category 5 hurricane.

At Harrington Towers, the thirty-floor glass headquarters of my father’s empire, the atmosphere was funereal. The front lobby, usually bustling with high-priced consultants and eager corporate climbers, was swarming with financial journalists, camera crews, and process servers.

Inside the executive boardroom, my father sat at the head of the mahogany table, looking as though he had aged ten years overnight. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless weekend of crisis management.

Vanessa sat beside him, pale and shivering, wrapped in a designer cashmere cardigan as if she were freezing. Her social circle had completely vanished; phone calls to her bridesmaids and society contacts had gone straight to voicemail since midnight Sunday.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and Harrison Cole walked in, flanked by two Northbridge restructuring associates. He didn’t bother waiting to be invited; he dropped a thick stack of legal briefs right in front of my father.

“What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Dad croaked, his voice raw.

“It’s a statutory freeze, Arthur,” Harrison replied, his tone ice-cold and professional. “Following Graham Ellison’s suspension from his firm and our discovery of his multi-million-dollar escrow embezzlement, Northbridge Capital is exercising its senior debt covenants over Harrington Home Group.”

Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. “You can’t do that! That’s our family company!”

“It was your family company,” Harrison corrected her smoothly. “Until your fiancé attempted to clean out the escrow reserves and use your father’s holding structure as a money-laundering vehicle. Because Arthur signed off on Graham’s legal retainer without performing basic due diligence, your personal equity guarantees are now forfeit.”

Dad stared down at the documents, his hands trembling as he realized the full, devastating extent of the trap Graham had laid—and that I had inadvertently saved them from total financial annihilation.
