Chapter 14 - The New Director

By Thursday morning, Northbridge Capital’s formal restructuring of Harrington Home Group was announced to the public via an SEC filing.

The market response was immediate and positive. Wall Street analysts praised the swift removal of fraudulent liabilities and the appointment of an independent, highly competent operational board to steer the company back to profitability.

What the public press releases didn't mention—and what only a few high-ranking executives at Northbridge knew—was who had been quietly appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer of the entire enterprise.

I sat behind the spacious, glass-topped executive desk on the thirtieth floor of Harrington Towers.

The office had been completely redecorated. The ostentatious gold plaques and framed magazine covers boasting about my father’s fake milestones were gone. In their place were clean, minimalist architectural lines, a stack of verified retail logistics reports, and a small, framed watercolor painting that Lily had painted for me on her eighth birthday.

Harrison Cole walked in, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a final acquisition ledger.

“The transition documents are fully signed,” Harrison said, setting the folder on my desk with a satisfied smile. “Your father officially stepped down as CEO an hour ago. The board voted unanimously to confirm your appointment.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling Boston skyline.

“It’s strange,” I murmured. “For thirty years, I thought this room was a fortress. Now I realize it’s just a desk.”

“It’s whatever you make of it,” Harrison replied, smiling. “And considering you turned a retail floor into a masterclass in corporate defense, I’d say Harrington Home Group is finally in honest hands.”
