Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The sun rose over Elm Street the next morning with a crisp, brilliant clarity.

The frantic pounding of reporters and the frantic calls from my father had stopped entirely by dawn. Whatever emergency injunction Harrison Cole had filed overnight had effectively built an impenetrable legal titanium wall around our apartment.

When Lily padded into the kitchen in her unicorn pajamas, rubbing her eyes, I was pouring orange juice into a glass.

“Morning, sweetie,” I said, smiling warmly.

“Mommy, did the bad man go away?” she asked, looking up with a hint of childish worry.

I walked over, knelt down, and pulled her into a tight, fierce hug.

“He’s gone, baby,” I whispered into her brown hair. “And he’s never coming back. You did an amazing thing yesterday. But from now on, leave the corporate espionage to the professionals, okay?”

Lily giggled, pulling back with a bright, mischievous grin. “Only if you promise to teach me how to read balance sheets first.”

I laughed, feeling a profound, unshakeable lightness in my chest that I hadn't felt in years.

The wedding at Rosewood Estate was ruined. My sister’s aristocratic dreams had turned to dust, my father’s empire was undergoing a much-needed structural purge, and Graham Ellison was facing a future behind iron bars.
