Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Collapse

While we were securing Lily’s things from her locker, downtown at the glass-and-steel headquarters of Bennett & Sterling Enterprises, an entirely different kind of dismantling was underway.
Eleanor Bennett sat at the head of the massive mahogany boardroom table, flanked by three corporate attorneys who looked as though they had aged ten years overnight. Her phone had been buzzing incessantly for twenty minutes—calls from municipal judges who suddenly claimed they were “unavailable,” calls from bank compliance officers notifying her that corporate accounts had been frozen under emergency federal asset forfeiture protocols.
The heavy mahogany doors swung open without a knock.
Two federal marshals stepped into the boardroom, followed closely by Special Agent Miller, the senior investigator working directly under my father’s old division.
Eleanor stood up, her face twisted in aristocratic fury, her designer blazer trembling with indignation.
“How dare you burst into a private corporate boardroom?” Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing off the glass walls. “Do you know who my husband was? Do you know how many state senators sit on our philanthropic board? I demand to speak to the district attorney immediately!”
Agent Miller didn't blink. He walked up to the mahogany table, pulled a thick sheaf of federal warrants from his jacket, and slapped them down right in front of her coffee cup.
“You can speak to whoever you like once you’re processed at the federal holding facility, Mrs. Bennett,” Miller said, his voice flat and clinical. “Warrants for wire fraud, obstruction of justice, subornation of perjury, and systematic racketeering involving municipal zoning bribes.”
Eleanor’s hand flew to her throat, her chest heaving as the reality of the situation finally pierced her armor of wealth and privilege. “This is insane... Marcus! Marcus will handle this! Marcus is my son!”
“Your son,” Miller replied coldly, “is currently in a holding cell downtown waiting for his arraignment on domestic assault and conspiracy charges. The family empire you built on intimidation and corruption is officially being liquidated by the federal government.”
Miller nodded to the marshals.
“Take her into custody.”

As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Eleanor’s wrists, the illusion that had protected the Bennett family for three generations shattered into a million invisible pieces on the polished boardroom floor.
