Chapter 19 - The Winter Sanctuary

When December descended in earnest, burying the dirt road and the pine boughs beneath two feet of pristine, glittering white snow, the cabin truly became our fortress of peace.
On a Saturday morning, the thermometer dipped well below freezing, casting a thick layer of frosted lace across every windowpane.
Lily and I bundled up in heavy wool coats, thick scarves, and waterproof boots, stepping out onto the snow-covered front lawn to build our first massive snowman of the season. Dad stood on the porch with a steaming mug of coffee, acting as our official architectural consultant.
“Make sure the base is structurally sound, girls!” Dad called out, chuckling as I packed a dense snowball and hoisted it onto the middle tier.
“Don't worry, Chief!” I shouted back, brushing snow off my gloves. “We’re following strict federal guidelines for winter fortifications!”
Lily giggled uncontrollably, pressing two smooth black stones into the snow-pack face for eyes and crowning our creation with an old woolen cap.
As I stood back to admire our work, snowflakes swirling gently around us in the crisp winter air, I took a deep, clear breath. My ribs were fully healed, leaving no physical trace of the night that had changed everything. But more importantly, the psychological scars—the lingering fear of control, the heavy weight of intimidation—had completely dissolved.
