Chapter 18 - The Community Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving arrived with freezing rain and howling winds that rattled the windowpanes, but inside the cabin, the air was rich with the roasting aroma of turkey, sage, and buttery mashed potatoes.

For the first time in our lives, we weren’t attending a stiff, forced holiday gathering designed to project status and corporate prestige for the Bennett family. There were no fake smiles, no backhanded compliments from Eleanor across a formal dining table, and no suffocating rules.

Instead, our guests were our neighbors from down the road—an elderly retired carpenter named Tom and his wife, Martha, who had brought over a homemade blackberry pie and a basket of fresh apples.

We sat around the heavy wooden dining table, passing bowls of food back and forth, sharing stories, and laughing until our sides hurt. Lily sat between Tom and me, eagerly describing her plans for the winter snow sculptures she wanted to build once the first blizzard hit.

“You know, Arthur,” Tom said, raising a glass of sparkling cider toward my father, “when you first moved out here, folks thought you were just a retired hermit. Turns out, having a federal prosecutor in the neighborhood is great insurance against stray raccoons.”

Everyone burst out laughing, including Dad, who shook his head with a broad, genuine smile.

Later that evening, after our guests had departed and Lily had drifted off to sleep upstairs, I stood at the kitchen sink washing the final dishes while Dad dried them with a cotton towel.

“Happy Thanksgiving, Dad,” I said quietly.

“Happy Thanksgiving, Claire,” he replied, putting the last plate away. “We’ve got a lot to be thankful for this year.”
