Chapter 16 - The Roots Take Hold

By late October, the landscape around the cabin had transformed into a masterclass of autumn colors. Vibrant reds, burnt oranges, and deep ambers painted the ridgeline, while the daffodil bulbs Lily and Dad had planted weeks earlier settled quietly into the cool, rich earth, resting beneath the soil until spring.

Life had settled into a steady, beautiful rhythm. The legal battles were officially behind us; Daniel Brooks had sent over the final stamped certificates of dissolution and custody, filing them away in a secure archive that would never need to be opened again.

On a crisp Friday afternoon, I sat at the wooden kitchen table reviewing applications for a remote logistics coordination position with a regional humanitarian aid network. It was work that used my operational skills and tactical mind, but allowed me to do it from home, keeping my schedule entirely flexible for Lily.

From the backyard, I could hear the faint sound of hammering and cheerful chatter. Dad and Lily were putting the finishing touches on the treehouse roof, shingling the small wooden structure with leftover cedar planks.

When Lily ran inside a few minutes later for a glass of water, her cheeks were flushed with healthy color, and her eyes sparkled with the unhurried joy of a childhood restored.

“Mom, Grandpa says we need to paint the front door bright yellow so the birds can find our porch easier,” she announced, taking a large gulp of water from her cup.

“Bright yellow?” I laughed, closing my laptop. “Won’t that blind every deer that walks past the cabin?”

“No way, it’ll look awesome!” she insisted with a cheeky grin.

I pulled her close, kissing the top of her head. In that simple, bright kitchen, surrounded by the smell of sawdust and falling leaves, I knew we had truly planted our roots here.
