Chapter 6 - The Retrieval at St. Jude’s

The morning air was crisp and biting as our black sedan pulled through the wrought-iron gates of St. Jude’s Academy, an elite private boarding and day school tucked away on the affluent north side of the city.

For years, the Bennetts had paid for Lily’s tuition, treating the school like an extension of their corporate estate where administrators bowed and scraped at the mere mention of Eleanor’s name. But today, the atmosphere at the front administration office was thick with panic and confusion.

I stepped out of the car, my ribs throbbing slightly against the supportive binder beneath my wool coat, but adrenaline and maternal fury kept the pain at bay. Dad walked beside me, his stride steady and commanding, while Daniel Brooks flanked our right side with a leather folder containing federal custody mandates and emergency injunctions signed by a federal magistrate.

The headmistress, a stiff, impeccably groomed woman named Mrs. Gable, rushed out from her inner office, her face pale as she recognized Daniel and the federal credentials flashing on his lapel.

“Mr. Brooks... Mr. Hayes,” Mrs. Gable stammered, wringing her hands together. “We received a frantic call from Eleanor Bennett an hour ago demanding that we lock down the campus and refuse release of Lily to anyone outside their legal counsel. She said—she said there was an emergency family dispute—”

“The only emergency on this campus, Mrs. Gable,” Dad interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register that made the headmistress flinch, “was your willingness to act as a private security arm for a family currently under federal racketeering indictment. Where is my granddaughter?”

Mrs. Gable swallowed hard, her professional composure completely shattering under the weight of federal authority. “She—she’s in the art room on the second floor. Third door on the right. I’ll have her brought down immediately—at once!”

“Don’t bother,” I said, stepping past her toward the grand staircase. “I’ll get her myself.”
