Chapter 7 - The Midnight Text

I sat in a hard plastic chair beside Claire’s hospital bed, watching the slow, steady rise and fall of her chest. Her face looked too pale, her cheekbones too sharp under the harsh hospital lighting.
My phone buzzed silently in my hand.
I pulled it out and looked at the screen. The anonymous text message I had received outside the house flashed again:
“Ethan, don’t go back to the house tonight. They’ve already changed the locks at the county recorder’s office. The deed has your mother’s name on it now.”
I stared at the words, my military training kicking in to analyze the tactical situation. Who would send this? Who in our small town knew what my mother and sister were up to?
I tapped out a reply: Who is this?
Within seconds, my phone vibrated.
“A friend who watched your father get manipulated on his deathbed. Check his physical safe in the study. Not the decoy safe in the wall. The real one behind the grandfather clock.”
My breath hitched. My father’s safe.
Before I left for deployment, my father had shown me the heavy steel vault embedded in the reinforced concrete behind the antique grandfather clock in his downstairs study. Only he and I knew the combination.
If my mother had somehow seized the deed to the house while I was away, she couldn't have done it legally without my signature—unless she had forged power of attorney or coerced Claire into signing documents under duress.

Which explained why Claire had whispered “Documents” right before passing out in the snow.
