Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

My mother’s expression shifted instantly from shock to defensive indignation, the classic armor she always used when she was caught doing something shameful.

“Don't use that tone with me, Ethan,” she snapped, smoothing the front of her designer sweater. “You march into this house after months of radio silence, tracking mud across my clean floors, and you immediately start interrogating your own family?”

“Your floors?” I stepped toward her, towering over her by a foot. “That’s funny, Mother. Last time I checked the deed in the county clerk’s office, this house belongs to me. And Claire.”

Natalie stepped up beside our mother, sneering. “Oh, please. Dad left the estate to the family name, Ethan. Not to some outsider who barely knows how to run a household. Claire doesn't belong here. She never did.”

“She is my wife,” I growled, the restraint holding my temper together threatening to tear. “And I found her freezing unconscious on the driveway while you two were sitting inside drinking my dead father’s wine and laughing.”

“She locked herself out!” Natalie shot back defensively, though her eyes darted nervously toward the hallway. “We didn't throw her out! She’s unstable. She gets hysterical over nothing, and she wandered outside like a lunatic trying to make us look bad!”

“A lunatic in a thin sweater? With bruised wrists and a beaten jaw?” I took another step forward, the sheer fury radiating off me making both of them flinch. “Don't lie to me. I saw the bruises. I heard what she said before she passed out. You tried to force her to sign papers.”

My mother’s face went chalk white. She exchanged a panicked glance with Natalie.

“She’s lying,” Mother stammered, her voice losing its edge. “The girl is ungrateful. We were just trying to help her organize your father’s estate paperwork while you were away. She threw a fit, slammed doors, and ran outside. It’s her own fault.”

Before I could answer, the wail of approaching sirens echoed down our quiet suburban street, cutting through the night air like a blade.
