Chapter 14 - Reclaiming the Threshold

The front porch looked different today.

The lingering patches of snow were melting under a bright, piercing winter sun. I pulled the truck into the driveway, killed the engine, and walked around to open the passenger door.

Claire stepped out slowly, wearing a thick wool coat I had bought her the day before, her boots crunching softly against the gravel. She looked up at the house—the towering brick walls, the glowing windows, the heavy oak front door.

For a second, I saw hesitation in her posture, the residual ghost of the trauma she had endured on these very stones.

I stepped close behind her, wrapping my arm securely around her waist, pressing my palm against her shoulder.

“It’s ours, Claire,” I whispered softly into her hair. “Nobody will ever make you feel unwelcome here again.”

She leaned back against my chest, taking a deep, steadying breath of the cold winter air. Then she took a step forward, ascending the porch steps with her head held high.

I pulled out the heavy brass key—the real key, registered in my name at the county recorder’s office—and slid it into the lock.

It turned smoothly.
