Chapter 11 - The Badge and the Bracelet

My mother’s face instantly drained of color. The silver candlestick trembled in her hand.

“What... what is this?” she stammered, stepping back as two uniformed local deputies strode down the hallway, led by Deputy Chief Miller—a man who had known my father for thirty years.

Miller stepped into the study, his eyes sweeping from my mother’s silk robe to the open safe and the legal folders in my hands. He looked grim.

“Sergeant Hayes,” Miller nodded respectfully. “We received an urgent call from St. Jude Memorial Hospital regarding suspected domestic abuse and coercion involving Mrs. Claire Hayes. The attending physician filed an official complaint, and the hospital social worker requested an immediate welfare and property check.”

Mother found her voice, rallying with hysterical indignation. “Chief Miller! Thank God! My son broke into my home in the middle of the night! He’s threatening me! Arrest him!”

Miller didn't even look at her. He turned his steady gaze to my mother instead.

“Helen Hayes, you’re not calling the shots tonight,” Miller said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “We’ve already spoken with the county prosecutor regarding the quitclaim deed filed three weeks ago. Given the hospital’s medical documentation of physical trauma and starvation, we have probable cause for charges of elder/dependent adult abuse, coercion under duress, and falsification of legal documents.”

Natalie appeared in the hallway behind the deputies, her eyes wide with terror. “You can’t arrest her! This is our house!”

“It was never your house,” I said, stepping past them toward the front door.

As the cold metal cuffs clicked around my mother’s wrists, she glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. But for the first time in my life, her glare had no power over me at all.
