Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Threshold

Later that evening, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep strokes of violet and gold.
I sat on the front porch swing with Claire, her head resting comfortably against my shoulder, her hand safely interwoven with mine. The evening breeze carried the sweet, earthy scent of spring rain and blooming jasmine from the garden next door.

Home wasn't the walls, or the deed in the county safe, or the family name carved into history. I pressed a soft kiss into Claire's hair, listening to her steady, peaceful breathing, ready for whatever horizon tomorrow brought.
