Chapter 7 - Breaking the Chain

“Colonel Richard Hayes, Retired,” General Vance said, his voice flat, devoid of warmth or respect. “I read your service record. Thirty-two years in logistics and garrison command. A commendable career.”

My father blinked, momentarily disarmed by the acknowledgment. “Yes, sir. And my family has always—”

“And yet,” General Vance interrupted, stepping past the chain-link fence as a junior aide quietly unlatched the gate, “for a man who spent his life in uniform, you seem entirely unfamiliar with what true command entails.”

The general stepped out onto the open grass beside me, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a woman wearing jeans and a button-down shirt, while the entire town watched in stunned silence.

“You honor your son for peacetime deployments and administrative honors,” General Vance continued, his eyes scanning the festive banners overhead. “You celebrate a manufactured lineage while erasing the officer who spent twenty-eight years in black-site intelligence, directing the operations that kept this country from tearing itself apart in the shadows.”

Michael hurried down from the stage now, his face flushed with embarrassment and anger. “General, with all due respect, my sister’s record was classified for a reason! She was insubordinate—she broke protocol during the 2008 contingency in Central Asia—”

“She saved a trapped strike team when your command structure ordered them left behind to die, Commander Hayes,” General Vance snapped, his voice ringing like a whip-crack.

The park fell deathly silent.

Michael flinched as if he had been physically struck, stepping back a half-pace. My mother clutched her handkerchief, her eyes wide with terror as the dark secret our family had buried for nearly two decades was laid bare under the midday sun.
