Chapter 6 - The Weight of Silence

For several seconds, the only sound in Jefferson Memorial Park was the low, steady rumble of idling engines from the tactical convoy.

My father stood frozen at the podium, his hand still half-raised in a pathetic, ignored gesture of greeting. His face had turned a mottled, unhealthy shade of crimson. Beside him, Michael gripped the edge of the wooden desk so tightly his knuckles were stark white.

General Vance slowly lowered his hand from his cap, his stern, weathered gaze sweeping past the stunned crowd before returning to me.

“Colonel Hayes,” General Vance said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the grass. “The Secretary of Defense extends his personal apologies for the administrative oversight that kept your classified commendations sealed until today. But we are here to ensure the record is set straight.”

Inside the fenced perimeter, a collective murmur erupted among the townspeople.

“Colonel Hayes?”

“Which Hayes? Victoria? But Richard said she just worked a desk job...”

“She outranks Michael?”

My father finally found his voice, stepping away from the microphone, his boots clicking frantically against the stage steps as he hurried toward the fence.

“General Vance, there’s been some mistake,” my father called out, his voice trembling with a mixture of panic and wounded pride. He pushed through the gap in the folding chairs, his chest puffed out out of sheer habit. “My son Michael is a commander, and I am a retired colonel. This woman—Victoria—she hasn't been part of active family operations in decades. She left the service under...”

He stopped short, swallowing hard as General Vance turned his head slowly to look at him.

The look in the four-star general's eyes was absolute ice.
