Chapter 14 - Choosing a New Path

I looked at my younger brother, seeing past the uniform, the rank insignia, and the lifetime of manufactured privilege.
“Silence is a choice, Michael,” I said quietly. “And complicity has a price. You built your career on a foundation of unearned praise and hidden truths. Now you have to decide whether you’re going to keep playing the part they wrote for you, or start earning your own rank.”
Michael looked up, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “How do I fix this?”
“You don't fix it with apologies or family PR campaigns,” I said, my tone uncompromising. “You take your next deployment. You go to the hardest sector, take command of the unit nobody else wants, and you lead with absolute integrity when nobody is watching. If you come back, let it be because you earned your stripes—not because of our last name.”
He stood in silence for a long moment, the weight of my words sinking into him. Slowly, stiffly, Michael drew himself up, offering a clumsy, formal salute.
“Understood, Colonel,” he murmured.

He turned, pulled open the glass door, and walked out of my office without looking back.
