Chapter 18 - The Congressional Hearing

Two weeks later, the secure briefing room of the Capitol Hill oversight committee was packed with senior defense officials, media representatives, and military attachés.
I sat at the witness table, dressed in my immaculate dress uniform, the ribbons of my service gleaming under the harsh overhead lights.
The committee chairman, a seasoned senator with a stern expression, adjusted his microphone.
“Colonel Hayes, your directorate has submitted a sweeping report detailing systemic oversight failures and deliberate falsification of operational logs dating back nearly two decades,” the chairman said formally. “Can you summarize your findings for the record?”
I leaned toward the microphone, my voice steady, clear, and resonant.
“Mr. Chairman, an institution’s true strength is measured not by how it celebrates its victories, but by how honestly it confronts its failures,” I began, looking out across the crowded room. “For too long, administrative safety and institutional ego have shielded those who sacrifice their own personnel in the shadows. My directorate has laid bare the unvarnished truth. The record is now corrected. It is up to this committee to ensure it is never repeated.”

The silence in the congressional room was absolute. The documentation we provided was so thorough, so unassailable, that not a single voice rose in defense of the old guard.
