Chapter 11 - The Pentagon Command Post

By Sunday evening, the convoy had transported me straight to Andrews Air Force Base, where a C-17 transport aircraft flew us directly into Washington, D.C.
Within two hours of touching down, I was standing inside the secure underground operations center at the Pentagon. The hum of server racks and the quiet chatter of tactical analysts filled the vast, windowless room. Monitors displayed global satellite feeds, encrypted signal traffic, and real-time theater updates.
This was where I belonged. Not on a manicured park lawn surrounded by pompous speeches and hollow family myths, but here—where decisions mattered and lives were saved through calculated precision.
My chief of staff, Colonel Thomas, stepped up to my desk, laying down a leather-bound briefing folio.
“Welcome back, Colonel Hayes,” Thomas said, his tone a mix of professional deference and genuine warmth. “The Joint Chiefs have finalized your new assignment directive. You’ve been appointed as Senior Director of Special Operations Intelligence Oversight.”
I opened the folder, scanning the crisp, black-and-white text. “An oversight role? They're giving me the keys to audit every black-site archive in the Department of Defense?”

“They aren't just giving them to you, Colonel,” Thomas smiled faintly. “They’re expecting you to clean house. The brass knows that if anyone has the institutional courage to cut through the red tape and protect field operatives from political scapegoating, it’s you.”
