Chapter 7 - Shadows in the BrigThe Coronado naval brig smelled of bleach, damp concrete, and unyielding steel.

The heavy pneumatic door hissed shut behind me, sealing off the sterile hallway as I walked down the narrow corridor toward Cell Block 4. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a harsh, sickly glow across the institutional green walls.

Tyler was sitting on the edge of a bolted steel bunk, his civilian jumpsuit replacing the crisp dress whites he had worn so proudly just hours before. His head was bowed, his hands cuffed to a fixed loop on the metal table bolted to the floor.

When my boots clicked against the concrete, he didn't look up immediately.

“They took my ring,” Tyler muttered, his voice hollow, stripped of all its usual swagger. “They took my commission. They stripped my rank before the sun even went down.”

“You committed federal fraud, Tyler,” I said, stopping three feet short of the cell bars. “Rank doesn't protect you from a federal indictment.”

Tyler slowly raised his head. His eyes—usually so bright and full of calculated arrogance—were bloodshot and wild. The veneer had completely cracked, revealing the terrified, small-minded bully underneath.

“You did this,” he hissed, lunging forward as far as the chain would allow. “You spent six years plotting this, didn't you? You sat back in the shadows like a parasite, waiting for me to reach the top just so you could rip the rug out from under me!”

“You put yourself at the top of a house built on stolen money and forged signatures,” I replied, my voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion. “I just kicked the foundation.”

“Mom and Dad are ruined,” Tyler snarled, his voice breaking into a desperate rasp. “Dad’s accounts are locked. The board of directors ousted him by 4:00 PM. Everything we built—everything I earned—”

“You earned nothing, Tyler,” I interrupted sharply, stepping closer to the bars. “You stole my clearance codes in 2023 to mask the first diversion of funds. You used my medical discharge as a cover story to make sure nobody would ever look at my personnel file. You made me the family disgrace so you could play the hero.”

Tyler stared at me, his chest heaving. For a second, a flicker of genuine fear crossed his face.

“What happens to me now?” he whispered.

“A military tribunal,” I said, turning away from the cell. “And a very long time to think about what happens when you underestimate the people you left behind in the dark.”
