Chapter 6 - The Long Drive Back to San DiegoThe black sedan slid quietly through the iron gates of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, leaving the chaos of the officer’s club far behind.

In the back seat, Commander Sarah Vance sat with the leather folder open across her knees, her pen scratching rhythmic notes against the margins of a financial audit report. Up front, the driver kept his eyes fixed on the road, navigating the familiar coastal highway as the Pacific Ocean rolled endlessly to our right, gray and restless under the afternoon sky.
“Your father’s corporate accounts in La Jolla are already frozen,” Vance said without looking up. “The DOJ isn’t just looking at the veterans’ foundation anymore. Once federal investigators cross-reference the shell companies Tyler set up with the defense contracts in 2023, the whole empire is going to unravel.”
I stared out the window, watching the blur of palm trees and sun-bleached stucco buildings. “He thought he was untouchable. My father spent thirty years teaching Tyler that rules were just speed bumps for people with money and a military pedigree.”
“And what did he teach you?” Vance asked, glancing over her shoulder.
“To stay invisible,” I replied quietly. “Which turned out to be the best tactical advantage I could have ever asked for.”
When I joined Naval Intelligence six years ago, I didn't join to wear dress whites or pose for cameras. I joined because I wanted to understand how systems protect corruption. Tyler wanted the glory; I wanted the truth. While he was busy memorizing drill commands and collecting hollow commendations, I was knee-deep in black-budget ledgers, tracking the exact digital fingerprints he left behind when he thought nobody was watching.
My phone buzzed against my palm.
