Chapter 16 - The Silence of the West WingThe West Wing of the Pentagon had a different kind of quiet than the underground sub-levels of Division 9. It was a stifling, carpeted silence—the kind that came from centuries of political maneuvering, compromised morals, and institutional self-preservation.

Two weeks after Admiral Marcus Vance’s indictment, the shockwaves were still rippling through the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I walked down the dim corridor, my heels clicking softly against the dark blue wool carpet. Secret Service agents posted outside the Secretary of Defense’s office barely blinked as I passed. They knew who I was now. Word travels fast when a mid-level forensic auditor systematically dismantles a four-star admiral’s black-budget empire in less than thirty days.

When I pushed open the double doors of the inner conference room, Secretary of Defense Alan Brooks was sitting at the head of a massive mahogany table, flanked by two senior legal counsels and Major General Harrison.

“Director Mercer,” Secretary Brooks said, gesturing to the empty chair directly across from him. “Take a seat. We have a situation.”

I sat down, resting my leather portfolio on the table. “I assume this isn’t about the procurement reforms we implemented in San Diego.”

“Hardly,” Brooks replied, sliding a thick, classified dossier across the table. The cover was stamped with a red EYES ONLY banner. “With Marcus Vance and his network behind bars, a power vacuum opened up in the Pacific theater logistics command. And someone is trying to fill it before our internal audit reaches the Indo-Pacific command structure.”

I opened the dossier. Inside were satellite photographs of a private shipping freighter anchored off the coast of the Philippines, paired with encrypted financial wire transfers originating from a shell corporation tied directly to Vanguard Defense Logistics.

“They’re still moving the assets,” I murmured, studying the data. “Vance wasn't the head of the snake. He was just the regional manager.”

“Exactly,” General Harrison leaned forward, his face grim. “And the person pulling the strings overseas has just threatened to release classified operational data on our active-duty cyber fleets if the Department of Defense doesn't drop all pending charges against the conspirators.”

I looked up from the dossier, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of my mouth.

“Give me twenty-four hours, Mr. Secretary,” I said quietly. “I’ll show them what happens when you try to blackmail Division 9.”
