Chapter 19 - The Dawn of a New EraTwo months after the Colorado trip, the Pentagon announced a sweeping, historic overhaul of the Department of Defense logistics and oversight divisions.

The press conference was broadcast live across national networks.

I stood in the wings of the main auditorium in Washington D.C., watching Secretary Brooks at the podium as he outlined the new transparency protocols, anti-corruption safeguards, and the permanent establishment of Division 9 as an independent federal oversight agency.

“For too long, the integrity of our armed forces has been tested not by external enemies, but by internal corruption,” Secretary Brooks announced to the crowded press corps. “Today, thanks to the relentless investigative work of Director Chloe Mercer and her team, we are turning a corner. The Department of Defense belongs to the men and women who wear the uniform with honor—not those who seek to profit from it.”

As the camera flashes erupted across the stage, Major General Harrison walked up beside me, handing me a small, leather-bound journal.

“What’s this?” I asked, looking at the familiar cover.

“It was recovered from your father’s estate when the final asset seizure was processed,” Harrison said quietly. “Your mother asked my office to pass it along. No strings attached.”

I took the journal, opening it to the first page where my mother’s old handwriting read: “Chloe is quiet today. She notices everything. She’s going to be extraordinary.”

I closed the cover, slipping it into my briefcase alongside my operational reports.

“Are you ready for the confirmation hearing tomorrow, Director?” Harrison asked with a faint smile.

“Always, General,” I replied. “The real work is just beginning.”
