Chapter 6 - The Federal Sweep on Floor 42

The morning sun cast long, fractured shadows across the 42nd-floor executive bullpen of Meridian Logistics, but inside Vanessa Cole’s corner office, the light felt suffocating.

The heavy oak doors swung open without a customary knock, and two men in tailored charcoal suits stepped into the room. They didn't look like corporate auditors or regional managers. They moved with the silent, absolute authority of federal marshals.

Vanessa stood up from her executive leather chair, her face flushed with indignation, her fingers gripping the edge of her glass-topped desk so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“This is a private corporate floor,” Vanessa snapped, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain her boardroom composure. “Who let you past security? Show me your credentials immediately.”

The lead investigator didn't blink. He pulled a laminated federal badge from his breast pocket and flipped it open, displaying the gold seal of the Department of Justice, alongside an emergency court-ordered warrant signed by a federal magistrate just twenty minutes prior.

“Agent Miller, U.S. Department of Justice, Economic Crimes Division,” the man said smoothly. “We have an active search and seizure warrant for all physical records, digital server backups, and financial ledgers associated with Meridian Logistics’ executive discretionary accounts and affiliated shell entities, specifically Apex Consulting Group.”

Across the room, Derek froze mid-stride, his matcha latte slipping from his fingers and shattering against the imported Italian tile floor, sending green liquid splashing across his designer sneakers.

“Apex... Apex Consulting?” Derek stammered, his face draining of all color. “That’s... that’s a consulting vendor. You can’t just barge in here—”

“Mr. Mercer, you are currently named as the primary beneficiary of over four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in unauthorized wire transfers routed through corporate reserve accounts without board approval,” Agent Miller interrupted, gesturing toward two digital forensic specialists who immediately marched past him and connected external cloning drives directly into the main office server terminals. “You’ll have plenty of opportunity to explain your consulting services to a federal judge.”

Vanessa’s knees wobbled, and she sank slowly back into her leather chair. For the first time since she had walked into Meridian Logistics wearing her expensive Armani suits and projecting untouchable corporate authority, she realized that the glass walls of her empire were made of thin, brittle ice—and the ice had just cracked right down the middle.
