Chapter 16 - The Final LedgerThe crisp wind of late autumn rattled the reinforced glass of the 42nd-floor corner office, but inside, the climate was warm, steady, and entirely controlled.

Julian Sterling placed the final certified audit report from the federal bankruptcy receivership squarely in the center of my mahogany desk. The cover page bore the official seal of the U.S. District Court, accompanied by the red ink stamp every litigator loved to see: FINAL EXECUTION AND SATISFACTION OF JUDGMENT.

“It’s officially over, Emma,” Julian said, leaning back into his leather chair with a satisfied sigh. “Meridian Logistics has been completely restructured under our holding trust. The remaining liquidation assets from Vanessa Cole’s estate have been fully collected, and the Department of Justice has officially closed the docket.”

I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the final financial distribution summaries. Every dollar of withheld salary, stolen bonus allocations, and statutory treble damages had been successfully recovered, alongside the transfer of ownership titles for the core logistics infrastructure.

“And the criminal proceedings?” I asked, keeping my voice completely even.

“Sentencing is set for next month,” Julian replied. “Given the mountain of forensic evidence you compiled and the paper trail Derek left behind in his offshore accounts, the federal prosecutor is pushing for a mandatory minimum of eight years for Vanessa and six for her nephew. No plea deals. No leniency.”

I closed the folder, running my hand gently over the embossed leather cover. I felt no triumph born of malice, nor any lingering shadow of resentment. Just the quiet, immovable peace of a mathematical equation finally resolving to zero.
