Chapter 12 - The Arraignment in Federal CourtWhile the 42nd floor hummed with productive energy, seventy blocks away in the U.S. District Court, the first acts of the legal reckoning were playing out under the harsh glare of media flashbulbs.

Marcus Vance called me from his car outside the courthouse just as the morning session adjourned.

“The arraignment just wrapped up, Emma,” Marcus said, his voice clipped and professional. “Vanessa Cole and Derek Mercer both entered pleas of not guilty, though their high-priced defense counsel looked like they were trying to defend a sinking ship with a paper cup.”

“Did they attempt to shift the blame?” I asked, resting my elbow against the edge of my desk.

“Oh, absolutely,” Marcus chuckled darkly. “Derek tried to claim he was just a marketing intern who didn't understand accounting ledgers, and Vanessa attempted to argue that her executive compensation decisions were standard industry practice approved by legacy management.”

“And the judge?”

“Federal Judge Callahan didn't buy a single word of it,” Marcus replied. “He denied their motions for bail reduction, cited the active flight risk given their offshore shell company footprints, and scheduled the full trial for early next quarter. They’re looking at serious federal time, Emma. The paper trail you built didn't just crack their defense—it vaporized it.”

I thanked Marcus, disconnected the call, and looked back out at the city. The people who had once treated me like disposable furniture were finally learning that the judicial system does not reward arrogance, and numbers do not lie to protect the powerful.
