Chapter 18 - The Sovereign of the InfrastructureBy mid-December, the winter snow began to dust the streets of Boston, transforming the city into a postcard of sparkling lights and bustling holiday energy.

Inside the 42nd-floor headquarters, our engineering teams were busy rolling out the next generation of automated supply chain analytics—systems built entirely from scratch, utilizing the proprietary code I had spent years perfecting in quiet obscurity.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the illuminated traffic moving smoothly along the harbor. Delivery trucks bearing our corporate insignia moved like clockwork along optimized routes, functioning with the precision of a Swiss watch.

My phone buzzed on the desk.

It was a simple notification from the foundation’s outreach director: “Over five hundred independent tech startups and student coders have registered for our spring ethics and software equity grants, Emma. We’re fully booked.”

I smiled, locking my screen and slipping the phone back into my pocket.

Instead, they had given me the exact friction I needed to build an empire of my own.
