Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO DIDN'T LOOK AWAYA year after Madeline was born, Grace attended Sunday dinner at Margaret's house.
She had almost refused.
Divorce had made family gatherings complicated.
But Margaret told her:
“You and Madeline are family. Caleb's choices don't get to evict you from the table.”
So Grace went.
The evening was surprisingly normal.
There was food.
Laughter.
Children running through the house.
Madeline playing with a toy.
Caleb sitting across the table.
There was no hatred in the room anymore.
Only history.
After dinner, Grace stood in the kitchen with Margaret.
Margaret finally asked:
“Do you regret showing me the photograph?”
Grace looked at her.
“No.”
Margaret's eyes became wet.
“I sometimes wonder whether I was too hard on him.”
Grace shook her head.
“You didn't destroy his world.”
Margaret looked confused.
“You stopped holding it together for him.”
Margaret began to cry.
Grace hugged her.
“You chose the truth.”
Margaret nodded.
“And you chose your daughter.”
Grace looked toward the dining room.
Madeline was laughing.
For the first time, Grace understood something.
The photograph had not ended her life.
May you like
It had ended the life she thought she had.
And that was not necessarily the same thing.
