Chapter 2 - HIS MOTHER SAW THE PHOTOMargaret entered the hospital room expecting to see her new granddaughter.

Instead, she immediately noticed Grace's expression.

“Where is Caleb?”

Grace looked down at the baby.

“He never came back.”

Margaret's face tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Grace reached for her phone.

“I need you to see something.”

She handed Margaret the photograph.

For several seconds, Margaret said nothing.

Her eyes moved from Caleb to Tessa.

Then to the champagne.

Then back to Caleb's face.

The woman who had raised three children alone after her husband died knew exactly what she was looking at.

She didn't ask whether there was an explanation.

She didn't say Grace was misunderstanding.

She simply looked at her son in that hotel room and whispered:

“Oh, Caleb.”

Grace expected anger.

Instead, Margaret's face became strangely calm.

“When did he send this?”

“During labor.”

Margaret looked toward Madeline.

Her expression changed.

“He sent this while you were giving birth to his daughter?”

Grace nodded.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Then she stepped into the hallway.

She spoke with hospital security and made sure Caleb would not be allowed into Grace's room unless Grace specifically requested him.

Then she returned.

“Do you want me to call him?”

“No.”

Margaret nodded.

“Then I won't.”

She sat beside Grace and began making phone calls.

Her oldest son, Daniel, was an attorney.

Then the hospital.

Then the family company's HR director.

Then the board chairman.

Then the family office.

Grace slowly realized that Margaret wasn't simply angry.

She was taking control.

By sunrise, Margaret had contacted everyone who needed to know.

Caleb finally called at 6:03 a.m.

Grace ignored him.

He texted.

“Where are you?”

Then:

“Baby here yet?”

Margaret stared at the screen.

Her expression hardened.

She typed one message:

“Grace and the baby are safe. You are not welcome at the hospital unless Grace requests your presence.”

Caleb immediately called his mother.

Margaret answered.

“Mom, what the hell is going on?”

“You missed your daughter's birth.”

“I can explain.”

“No,” Margaret replied. “You can explain to Daniel.”

Caleb tried to claim the photograph had been taken out of context.

Margaret interrupted him.

“A hotel room. Champagne. Another woman. Your wife in labor. What context could possibly make that acceptable?”

Silence.

Then Caleb made the mistake that changed everything.

“She shouldn't have shown you.”

Margaret's eyes hardened.

“That is your concern?”

Caleb said nothing.

“You should be ashamed.”

She ended the call.

Grace watched her mother-in-law return to the room.

“I am so sorry,” Margaret whispered.

Grace began crying.

May you like

Not because Caleb had finally hurt her.

But because Margaret had chosen to believe her.
