Chapter 1 - THE PHOTO THAT ARRIVED DURING LABORGrace had been in labor for eleven hours.

Her body was exhausted, her hospital gown damp with sweat, and every contraction seemed to tear another piece of strength from her. Her husband Caleb had left the delivery room twenty-three minutes earlier, promising he was only going to move the car.

She believed him.

Then her phone vibrated.

Grace expected a message saying he had found a parking space.

Instead, there was only a photograph.

Caleb was sitting on a hotel bed.

Beside him was Tessa Monroe, a beautiful blonde woman from his office. Her hand rested on his knee. A bottle of champagne stood on the nightstand. Caleb's shirt was open at the collar.

And he was smiling.

Not nervously.

Not guiltily.

He was smirking.

Grace stared at the screen as another contraction began.

The nurse, Jenna, noticed her expression.

“Grace? Are you okay?”

Grace locked her phone.

“Yes.”

It was the first lie she told that night.

The pain in her body was almost easier to understand than the pain in her heart.

Caleb was supposed to be beside her.

He was supposed to hold her hand when their daughter arrived. He was supposed to hear her first cry. He was supposed to be terrified, emotional, overwhelmed.

Instead, he was in a hotel room with another woman.

And the worst part was that Tessa wasn't a stranger.

Grace had met her.

Tessa had attended her baby shower.

She had brought a pink baby blanket and hugged Grace while telling her that Caleb would make a wonderful father.

Grace placed the phone face-down.

She refused to let Caleb's betrayal take the moment away from her daughter.

She breathed through every contraction.

In.

Out.

Again.

Then another contraction came.

And another.

Caleb never returned.

Hours later, when the doctor finally told her it was time, Grace pushed with everything she had left.

At 2:47 a.m., her daughter was born.

Tiny.

Furious.

Perfect.

The baby was placed against Grace's chest.

Grace looked down at her daughter and whispered:

“Hi, Madeline.”

For the first time that night, she smiled.

Caleb had missed everything.

The first cry.

The first touch.

The first moment their daughter opened her eyes.

But Grace was not alone.

Because there was one person she knew would look at that photograph and refuse to make excuses for him.

His mother.

May you like

Margaret Bennett.

And when Margaret arrived at the hospital before sunrise, Grace knew the real confrontation was about to begin.
