Chapter 7 - The Scramble for the ExitThe chapel descended into complete anarchy.

High-society matrons scrambled backward over mahogany pews, designer handbags tumbling to the floor. Prominent venture capitalists and corporate partners—many of whom had invested millions into Evan’s startup based on the stolen software framework—were already frantically tapping away on their smartphones, liquidating stock positions and calling their legal counsels before the market could open on Monday morning.

Two federal agents flanked Evan, gripping his arms tightly. The expensive Patek Philippe watch slipped down his sweat-slicked wrist as they slapped the steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

“Elena... please,” Evan choked out, turning his head desperately toward me as they dragged him down the central aisle, right past the spot where we had stood during our own ill-fated wedding vows six years ago. “We can talk about this. We can settle the patent rights... don’t do this to me.”

I stepped aside, letting him pass without a single word. There was no anger left in my chest—only a cold, crystalline satisfaction.

“You should have read the fine print three years ago, Evan,” I whispered as he was hauled past.

As the federal marshals escorted Evan through the heavy mahogany doors, Claire stumbled to her feet, her mascara running in dark streaks down her cheeks, screaming obscenities that echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

“I hate you!” Claire shrieked, pointing a shaking, diamond-ringed finger directly at my face. “You ruined everything! You’ve always been jealous of me! You stole my wedding!”

Mom rushed to Claire’s side, wrapping her arms around my sobbing sister while glaring at me with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

“Get out,” Mom hissed, her voice trembling with hatred. “You are dead to this family. As of today, you are no longer our daughter. Get out of our sight!”

I looked at the two people who had birthed me, the people who had hidden me behind a pillar like trash while cheering for my abuser.

“Family?” I said softly, holding Lily’s small hand tighter. “You never knew what the word meant. Keep the roses. I’m taking back my life.”
