Chapter 13 - The Silence of the CellSixty miles away at the federal correctional holding facility in Middlesex County, Evan Hart was experiencing a very different kind of reality.

Marcus Vance had forwarded me the visitor log and preliminary deposition transcripts from Evan’s initial interrogation with the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Stripped of his bespoke Brioni suits, his designer watch, and his corporate title, Evan sat in a stark, fluorescent-lit holding cell wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. The man who had walked into St. Jude’s Chapel radiating wealth and untouchable confidence was completely gone.

According to the federal marshals, Evan had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to trade information on every co-conspirator he knew—including my father and his own high-society business partners—just to secure a reduced sentence.

It didn't work.

When a white-collar criminal steals four million dollars in federal defense-subsidized tech infrastructure and attempts to launder it through family trusts during an active civil injunction, the Department of Justice doesn't cut deals. They make examples.

My phone buzzed with a text from Marcus:

“Evan’s defense counsel just formally requested a plea negotiation. They’re offering a full guilty plea on all five felony counts in exchange for dropping the aggravated conspiracy enhancements. He’s looking at ten to twelve years minimum security. No parole for at least seven.”

I stared at the screen for a long moment, watching the amber light pulse against the dark glass.

There was no rush of vindictive joy. No triumphant shout. Just the quiet, immovable satisfaction of a massive equation finally balancing out to zero.

I replied with a single word: “Accept.”
