Chapter 9 - The Confession at the Dining Table

By 2:00 PM, the forensic team had packed their gear bags, downloading terrabytes of encrypted hard-drive data, bank records, and communication logs.

Agent Miller allowed Mark five minutes alone with me at the dining room table before they led him out to the unmarked federal sedan waiting in the driveway.

Mark looked smaller now. The polished, confident corporate mask was entirely gone, replaced by a defeated, hollow shell of a man.

“I’m sorry, Sarah,” Mark said quietly, staring down at his cuffed wrists resting on the polished wood. “I didn't mean for any of this to touch you or Lily.”

“You embezzled millions of dollars, Mark,” I said, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of tears or screaming. “You brought federal agents to our front door. You used our family home as a front for a criminal enterprise, and you thought you’d never get caught.”

“It started small,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “A few thousand here to cover stock losses. Then Elena stepped in. She knew how to funnel it through international accounts. She... she controlled everything after a while. I couldn't get out.”

“Don't blame her for your cowardice,” I snapped, leaning across the table until my face was inches from his. “You made every single choice. Every lie you told me over dinner, every late night at the office, every mile you drove—you chose this.”

Mark looked up, tears finally welling in his eyes. “What about Lily?”

“Lily is my daughter,” I said, straightening up and stepping back. “And right now, the best thing that could possibly happen to her is for you to be as far away from this house as humanly possible.”

The front door opened. Agent Miller stepped in, placing a firm hand on Mark’s shoulder. “Time’s up, Mr. Miller. Let’s go.”

As they escorted him out the front door, I watched through the living room window. He didn't look back once. He was pushed into the back of the black sedan, the doors slammed shut, and the car pulled away down Maple Ridge Lane, disappearing around the corner where the neat suburban lawns suddenly looked like a foreign country.
