Chapter 20 - A New Horizon

Two weeks later, the moving truck pulled away from the curb of Maple Ridge Lane, carrying our few remaining legitimate belongings toward a small, sunlit two-bedroom apartment across town—close to Lily’s elementary school, far away from corporate cul-de-sacs and locked office doors.
I stood on the front porch of our new home, holding a cardboard moving box in my arms, and breathed in the crisp autumn air.
Lily was already inside, sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, excitedly arranging her collection of water bottles on the bottom shelf of the pantry.
The front door was unlocked. There were no federal agents standing guard, no burner phones buzzing on the counter, and no hidden lockboxes in the back of a closet.
I looked down at my left hand. The finger where my diamond wedding ring used to sit was bare, pale, and completely unburdened.
I had lost a husband, a house, and an illusion of a life I thought I knew. But as I heard Lily laughing inside, singing a silly song while unpacking her crayons, I realized something profound.

I hadn't lost my life at all. I had finally found it.
I smiled, stepped over the threshold, and closed the door behind me—ready for whatever chapter came next.
