Chapter 18 - The Decrypted Files

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the sun was streaming brightly through the windows of the safehouse, belying the sheer terror of the night before.
Detective Hayes had left a secure laptop on the kitchen table, connected directly to a encrypted terminal feed from the federal task force downtown.
“Forensics cracked Elena’s secondary drive an hour ago,” Hayes said over the phone when I answered the burner. “You were right to stay put, Sarah. The data dump contains everything. Not just the Apex Logistics embezzlement accounts, but financial records detailing every asset Mark and Elena controlled over the last three years.”
“Did they find anything about the house?” I asked, leaning against the counter with a cup of black coffee.
“Everything is frozen by court order. Your bank accounts, Mark’s corporate holdings, the mortgage—all locked under federal asset forfeiture laws pending trial. But here’s the kicker, Sarah. The house on Maple Ridge Lane? It wasn't bought with legitimate mortgage funds. Mark used a fraudulent shell corporation to purchase it three years ago using embezzled capital.”
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, heavy sigh. “So the house isn't even ours.”

“Technically, it belongs to the federal government now,” Hayes admitted gently. “Once the dust settles, you’ll have to petition the court for a hardship release so you and Lily can secure legitimate housing. But you won’t have to worry about debt collectors or creditors coming after you. The feds are wiping your personal name from the corporate liability charges, provided you cooperate as a witness.”
“I’ll cooperate,” I said, looking out the window at the quiet park trees. “Just tell me when I can go home and pack my daughter’s things.”
