Chapter 8 - The Search of Room 424

Within minutes, the house was swarming with federal personnel.

Another agent had joined Miller, securing the perimeter and setting up portable diagnostic gear in the kitchen. Agent Miller stood in the second-floor hallway, watching as two digital forensic specialists marched past me carrying specialized cloning hardware straight into Mark’s home office.

Mark sat quietly at the dining room table downstairs, his hands cuffed loosely behind his back with plastic zip-ties, staring blankly at the floral centerpiece.

I stood in the kitchen doorway, arms tightly crossed over my chest, shivering despite the warm afternoon air.

Agent Miller walked down the stairs, holding a small black plastic object in his gloved hand.

The burner phone from the lockbox.

He walked up to me, holding it out slightly. “Do you recognize this phone, Mrs. Miller?”

I shook my head, my throat feeling dry as sandpaper. “No. I found it twenty minutes ago in a locked metal box inside his desk.”

Miller raised an eyebrow, a flicker of professional curiosity crossing his sharp features. “A locked box? You opened it?”

“With a screwdriver,” I said honestly. “After I found three feet of human hair jammed inside his car’s exhaust pipe this morning.”

The agent paused, a rare hint of amusement touching the corner of his mouth before vanishing back into stoic professionalism. “Hair in the exhaust pipe? Let me guess—long, jet-black hair?”

My eyes widened. “How did you know that?”

Miller sighed, slipping the burner phone into an evidence bag. “Because your husband wasn't just laundering embezzled funds through offshore shell companies, Mrs. Miller. He was running a complex underground document-forgeries and identity-smuggling ring out of the city with an accomplice—a woman known in federal databases as Elena Vance. She uses aliases, dyes her hair, and has a habit of disposing of digital evidence by feeding it through high-temperature vehicle exhaust ports when she’s cornered.”

The room seemed to tilt again.

Elena. The woman from the photographs. The hair in the exhaust wasn't just a tacky token of an affair—it was a literal trail of contaminated evidence that Mark had tried to burn off or destroy on his way out of the driveway.
