Chapter 4 - Pandora’s Lockbox

The lockbox didn't require high-tech espionage; a simple turn of the screwdriver applied against the latch mechanism caused the cheap spring-loaded lock to snap open with a sharp, metallic pop.

My hands were shaking as I lifted the metal lid.

Inside wasn't cash or confidential corporate documents.

It was a collection of items that made my breath catch in my throat and sent a cold shiver racing down my spine.

Item one: A burner smartphone, turned completely off, resting beside a coiled USB-C charging cable.

Item two: A small, heavy velvet jewelry pouch. I untied the golden drawstring and tipped it over. Out rolled a pair of heavy, expensive diamond drop earrings—earrings that definitely did not belong to me. I had never seen them in my life.

Item three: A stack of printed photographs, bound together with a rubber band.

My fingers felt numb as I slipped the rubber band off and flipped through the stack.

The photos were color prints, clearly taken with a high-end digital camera or a modern smartphone. The first few pictures showed Mark’s car parked outside a sleek, unfamiliar apartment complex at night. Then came photos of Mark walking through a hotel lobby, smiling broadly—a smile I hadn't seen him direct at me in years—laughing alongside a tall, striking woman with long, jet-black hair.

The same hair I had pulled out of his exhaust pipe that very morning.

As I flipped further through the stack, the nature of the photos shifted. They weren't paparazzi shots taken by a private investigator; they were intimate, casual selfies. Mark and the black-haired woman sitting on a plush velvet sofa, sharing a bottle of wine. Mark kissing her forehead in a sunlit kitchen I didn't recognize.

And then, near the bottom of the stack, a picture that made my stomach violently churn.

It was a selfie taken in a master bathroom mirror. The woman was wearing an oversized white button-down shirt that clearly belonged to Mark—the monogrammed cuffs were unmistakable. She was smiling at the camera, holding up a clump of her own long, black hair as if playing with it, while Mark stood behind her in the reflection, his arms wrapped around her waist.

Tears stung my eyes, hot and sudden, but I refused to let them fall. Anger—cold, sharp, and absolute—burned right through the shock.

He hadn't just been cheating on me. He had been living a double life right under my nose, bold enough to keep trophies in a lockbox in his home office while I packed his lunch every morning.

I reached down to grab the burner phone from the box, needing to see who she was, what her name was, what messages they had exchanged.

Before my fingers could touch the plastic casing of the phone, the front door downstairs clicked open.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood entryway.

"Sarah?" Mark’s voice called out through the silent house, carrying an unnatural, urgent edge. "Sarah, are you home?"
